LinkedIn groups – are you building relationships for job networking?

Please view my article recently posted on the Examiner.com - LinkedIn groups – are you building relationships for job networking?

Most users of LinkedIn are aware of the capability to connect with others to build a network, but perhaps not as many use a very valuable tool LinkedIn provides – the groups feature. The groups feature, although not new, is often overlooked, and can be better leveraged for job networking, brand building, and creating quality relationships.

Benefits of joining a group

* Network with other members with common interests and share career information, job leads, tools, and tips
* Join groups with members of similar interests to “connect” with a wider base of contacts
* If you make yourself valuable / memorable, others will want to make you a part of their network and follow you
* Follow discussions, track industry news, post a resume (if group allows), view job postings

It has been my experience that most people on LinkedIn are professionals, and very little spam is received. Most people are actively looking for jobs, networking to help others, and using LinkedIn groups to increase visibility, contribute links, post job leads, post articles, and share contacts to support others in their job search.

I've joined a few LinkedIn groups in recent weeks after not being active in them at all. I've found some useful content, but haven't formed any connections just yet. I was surprised there wasn't an option to report spam, as some of the larger groups get hit with it sometimes.
