How far will people go to find a job in this economy?
According to a recent article in the
Wall Street Journal, people have resorted to using social networking tools to find work. This isn't so new to some because LinkedIn has long been a professional site that attracted hundreds of executive recruiters looking for viable candidates. As a result, lot of people on LinkedIn updated their p…

One challenge I face in my job as a regional HR director supporting multiple offices/regions is staying “in touch” with what employees are working on. Recently, I signed up for Yammer and I am already finding it beneficial in keeping me connected.
What is Yammer? Yammer is a free social networking service based on employees' answers to the question: "What are you working on?" It is similar to Twitter in that you can @ message specific followers, and you can use hashtags. It differs from Twitter…

I should probably be more upfront about this on the sidebar, but if you're posting links to drugs, or sex, or making money through google I'm just deleting and banning you without a second thought.
Let me know if someone is doing this in their profile - this is for real people, not the scum of the internet. And yes, if that's you, you're the scum of the internet. I do sometimes make mistakes, or run into someone who writes me, and I reinstate them, but I just don't have time to chase them down.…

I read an article in the
Washington Post recently that made me think about something a colleague said several years ago. We were discussing the marketing strategy for an association of sales professionals and how best to use email as a way to communicate with the membership. After a few minutes of discussion, my colleague offered his opinion on e-marketing and reminded us that we st…

Have you seen the difference in the new way Facebook is being used for professional networking lately? For many users that formally only used LinkedIn or Twitter, and rarely used Facebook, these same users are now sending out more requests to “connect” with their LinkedIn / Twi…

There have been more than enough stories reported in the media of late involving people making careless mistakes on social networking sites that result in job loss, a missed opportunity or lost business. Examples: the Ketchum PR exec who tweeted how much he hated Memphis, TN during a visit to Federal Express HQ's. Fed Ex found out about it and fired the agency. Or how about the opportunity that slipped through the hands of a potential job candidate when he tweeted about taking a boring job at Ci…

I had the distinct pleasure of joining Michael Kelemen on the Recruiting Animal Show yesterday to talk about Facebook. If you've never listened to the show, prepare yourself. It's a call-in show of rowdy miscreants and the occasional unsuspecting guest, all run by the Recruiting Animal himself. Yesterday's show had some technical difficulties, but the callers jumped in and grilled me, argued with me, and asked a lot of great questions.
There's a segment of the online recruiting world that just…

There appear to be some die-hard traditionalists who do not believe social media has a place in marketing products and services. That was the finding from a recent survey conducted by
Emailvision, a global email marketing service, which surveyed over 100 companies at a recent Online Marketing Show. The majority of companies said they prefer SEO and email as the leading tools to reach their target audience. The same companies cited little u…

Brightkite, a mobile social networking service and GfK Technology, a market research company, recently teamed up to conduct a survey on what people think about social networking. 87% of the 1000 people questioned say they prefer to deal with people face-to-face rather than through technology or smartphones. The results were reported in USA Today (Many adults say they're not sold on social networks).
How the questions for this survey were structured dictates how the responses are being articulat…
