As practitioners of social media, we have just started to scratch the surface of determining ROI or ROP. During the 3rd week of August in Tucson, AZ; we had a street being re-opened in the downtown area. Very few residents attended the re-opening, a…

Good post. Funny though, we're not seeing too many social media jobs in Chicago. Maybe HR doesn't know how to write the job descriptions or maybe companies are asking marketing and communications to take on this responsibility. Seems the latter woul…

@Margy: Wise move to pare back on the number of social networking sites. When using social networking sites to manage your reputation online, we have to take the advice we offer to our clients: Develop a strategy then sign up for the SN sites that w…

I agree with you completely. Sometimes a little common sense is exactly what is needed. My main blunder, as a newbie, was signing up for too many services all at once. I couldn't keep up with them, so I pared them back. Much more effective.

There have been more than enough stories reported in the media of late involving people making careless mistakes on social networking sites that result in job loss, a missed opportunity or lost business. Examples: the Ketchum PR exec who tweeted how…

I deal with participants or individuals who believe in the push and tell marketing techniques. They wish to do this with the social media and don't understand why nobody responds to their "advertising". These are the same individuals who do not unde…

@Margy: it's coming down to persuading older business owners/CEO's to consider a new way of marketing or letting them continue doing things the way they're most comfortable. But if they choose the latter, it could be costly, whereas at least explori…

So true, Cathy. Traditionally marketers have to adopt to this new environment. It's the way things are going, whether or not they like it. I'm a baby boomer who works with a lot of older small business owners. In general, I've found that they feel a…

Good question. I would begin by asking what are the objectives of our overall marekting strategy? Are we meeting or exceeding those objectives? If not, where are we failing? How can we measure the impact? Then I would start to look for opportunitie…

Will Tweet for Work

How far will people go to find a job in this economy?

According to a recent article in the Wall Street Journal, people have resorted to using social networking tools to find work. This isn't so new to some because LinkedIn has long been a professional site that attracted hundreds of executive recruiters looking for viable candidates. As a result, lot of people on LinkedIn updated their p… Continue

Enhance the Online Experience Offline and Measure the Results

I read an article in the Washington Post recently that made me think about something a colleague said several years ago. We were discussing the marketing strategy for an association of sales professionals and how best to use email as a way to communicate with the membership. After a few minutes of discussion, my colleague offered his opinion on e-marketing and reminded us that we st… Continue

Use of Social Media Requires Common Sense

There have been more than enough stories reported in the media of late involving people making careless mistakes on social networking sites that result in job loss, a missed opportunity or lost business. Examples: the Ketchum PR exec who tweeted how much he hated Memphis, TN during a visit to Federal Express HQ's. Fed Ex found out about it and fired the agency. Or how about the opportunity that slipped through the hands of a potential job candidate when he tweeted about taking a boring job at Ci… Continue

Social Media Maximizes Traditional Marketing

There appear to be some die-hard traditionalists who do not believe social media has a place in marketing products and services. That was the finding from a recent survey conducted by Emailvision, a global email marketing service, which surveyed over 100 companies at a recent Online Marketing Show. The majority of companies said they prefer SEO and email as the leading tools to reach their target audience. The same companies cited little u… Continue

Don't Believe the Hype -- Social Networking Has Value

Brightkite, a mobile social networking service and GfK Technology, a market research company, recently teamed up to conduct a survey on what people think about social networking. 87% of the 1000 people questioned say they prefer to deal with people face-to-face rather than through technology or smartphones. The results were reported in USA Today (Many adults say they're not sold on social networks).

How the questions for this survey were structured dictates how the responses are being articulat… Continue
